Dentures Q & A
What are dentures and partials?

Dentures, or false teeth, are dental prosthetics that replace some (or all) of your teeth. They rest on your gums and are held in place with a denture adhesive or dental implants.

Dentures make it easier to bite and chew and restore your smile to its original condition. By stimulating your gums and jawbone, they also reduce the risk of other oral health problems, such as gum recession and bone loss.

Partials replace some but not all of your teeth. Partial dentures sit on your gum line and are attached to your natural teeth, covering the space where your teeth are missing. In some cases, Dr. Etemad recommends using dental implants to stabilize partial dentures.

Are there different types of dentures?

At Newport Smile Studio, Dr. Etemad offers several types of dentures, including:

Partial dentures

Dr. Etemad recommends partial dentures if you’re missing only some of your teeth. Partial dentures have a metal framework that supports several artificial teeth and attaches to special clasps that Dr. Etemad bonds to your remaining natural teeth.

Complete dentures

Dr. Etemad recommends complete dentures if you’re missing all your teeth. Complete dentures have artificial gums and an entire row of false teeth. They rest on top of your gums and rely on your lower jawbone or upper palate for support.

Implant-retained dentures (All-on-4®)

Dr. Etemad may recommend implant-retained dentures or All-on-4 implants if you’re missing all your teeth and you have a healthy jaw and upper palate. Implant-retained dentures look like complete dentures. The difference is that they connect to dental implants –– small titanium screws inserted into your upper or lower jaw.

You do not remove implant-retained dentures. You brush and floss them daily to prevent plaque buildup.

What does getting dentures involve?

At Newport Smile Studio, getting dentures takes two visits, several weeks apart.

First Visit

Dr. Etemad reviews your dental records, completes an oral exam, and takes dental X-rays. She uses this information to determine the type of dentures that will benefit you. If you’re missing only a few teeth, she prescribes partial dentures. If you’re missing all your teeth, she may prescribe complete dentures or implant-retained dentures.

Next, Dr. Etemad takes digital impressions of your mouth with an intraoral scanner. She sends your impressions to a dental lab that manufactures your partial, complete, or implant-retained dentures. If you are getting All-on-4 implants, you will have a denture attached the same day as the procedure.

Second Visit

When the lab finishes your custom dentures, you return to Newport Smile Studio. Dr. Etemad places the new dentures inside your mouth and checks how they fit. Specifically, she looks for areas where they may pinch or irritate your gums. If she identifies any problem areas, she returns your dentures to the lab for further modifications.

If your dentures fit well, Dr. Etemad polishes them and provides care instructions.
