What types of stains can teeth whitening treat?
At Newport Smile Studio, Dr. Etemad uses teeth whitening to address stains that occur on the outside of your tooth enamel. These stains are caused by routine activities, such as drinking coffee, smoking, and eating foods with artificial coloring.
If your teeth are yellow due to a loss of enamel or staining from antibiotic use, for example, Dr. Etemad may suggest veneers or crowns instead.
Are there different types of teeth whitening?
Dr. Etemad offers two types of teeth whitening:
Philips Zoom!
Philips Zoom! is an in-office whitening procedure that can make your teeth up to 8 shades whiter in one treatment.
During your Zoom! teeth whitening session, Dr. Etemad applies a carbamide peroxide gel to your teeth. The gel is absorbed by your tooth enamel and oxidizes the stained molecules underneath. After the gel sits for 15-20 minutes, then Dr. Etemad points a special light at your teeth. The light activates the stain-removal process, eliminating discoloration and making your smile whiter and brighter.
If one round of treatment doesn’t produce satisfactory results, Dr. Etemad repeats the same process several times.
Take-home teeth whitening kits
Dr. Etemad prescribes custom take-home teeth whitening if you want to whiten your teeth on your own schedule. A home teeth whitening kit contains whitening gel and two plastic trays: one for your upper arch and one for your lower arch. You line each tray with the whitening gel and wear them daily, whenever it’s convenient for you.
Take-home teeth whitening doesn’t work as quickly as in-office Zoom! in-office whitening, but it provides similar results.
Are the results of teeth whitening permanent?
The results of teeth whitening aren’t permanent, but they typically last four to six months on average. To maintain your results, Dr. Etemad recommends brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing regularly, and drinking dark beverages, like coffee, with a straw.
