All-on-4 Q & A
What are All-on-4 dental implants?

All-on-4 dental implants are a type of implant-retained dentures that restore your smile in one day. Dr. Etemad might recommend them if you’ve lost teeth or have severely damaged teeth.

Traditional dental implants require one implant per missing tooth. So, if you’re missing eight teeth, you would need eight implants. All-on-4 implants are different in that just four implants support a full arch of artificial teeth. That provides various benefits, including:

  • A restored smile with natural-looking implants
  • Restorations that look, feel, and function like real teeth
  • Up to 70% more bite force so that you can eat your favorite foods
  • Permanent tooth restorations you don’t have to remove (unlike dentures)
  • Improved facial features that make you look younger
  • Reduced risk of bone recession so your jaw and upper palate stay healthy

Additionally, dental implants don’t rub against your gums, like dentures. So they’re more comfortable to wear.

Am I a candidate for All-on-4 dental implants?

To get All-on-4 dental implants, you must be missing most or all of your permanent teeth and have enough bone to support the implants. Since this type of dental implant can accommodate most people, bone grafting is not always necessary beforehand.

Dr. Etemad can explain further after reviewing your dental records, completing an oral exam, and taking dental X-rays to observe your upper and lower jawbone.

Tell her if you have a chronic health problem like diabetes or high blood pressure. Although these conditions won’t prevent you from getting implants, they can increase the risk of complications, so Dr. Etemad must be aware.

What does getting All-on-4 dental implants involve?

On the day of surgery, Dr. Etemad numbs your mouth with a local anesthetic and inserts four dental implants (small, titanium screws) into your upper jaw, lower jaw, or both jaws. All-on-4 dental implants are “immediate load,” meaning they can receive restorations immediately after placement.

After she finishes inserting the All-on-4 implants, she attaches implant-retained dentures to them. The implant-retained dentures restore your smile and your biting and chewing abilities, so you don’t have to wait weeks or even months for your mouth to heal.

Several months after the initial procedure, when your mouth fully heals, you return to Newport Smile Studio. At this appointment, Dr. Etemad attaches a final, permanent denture to your All-on-4 implants.

What is recovery like after All-on-4 implant surgery?

It’s normal to experience mild swelling, bruising, and bleeding after All-on-4 implant surgery. During the first 24-48 hours of recovery, get plenty of rest, take any medication as prescribed, and eat soft foods like scrambled eggs and yogurt. Brush and floss daily to keep your implants clean, and follow Dr. Etemad’s recovery instructions.

About a week after placement, you return to Newport Smile Studio for a checkup. Dr. Etemad examines your dental implants to ensure they’re integrating with your bone. She also assesses your bite and general oral health.
