Invisalign Q & A
What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a type of orthodontic treatment that uses a series of clear, nearly invisible plastic aligners to gradually straighten and move your teeth into place. Instead of using wires and rubber bands to put pressure on your teeth, Invisalign uses a thermoplastic known as SmartTrack®. SmartTrack is FDA-approved and free of all allergens, including gluten, BPA, BPS, and latex.

In addition to being nearly invisible, Invisalign aligners are also removable. This means you can take them out whenever you need to eat or drink. You can also remove your aligners to brush and floss your teeth, making them easier to care for than traditional braces. If you’re interested in learning more about orthodontic treatment with Invisalign, make an appointment with the team at Newport Smile Studio.

What types of issues does Invisalign treat?

Invisalign is incredibly versatile. However, Dr. Etemad usually recommends Invisalign to address mild or moderate orthodontic issues, including:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Tooth shape

You might also benefit from orthodontic treatment with Invisalign if you have gaps or spaces between your teeth.

Am I a candidate for treatment with Invisalign?

To determine if you’re a candidate for orthodontic treatment with Invisalign, make an appointment with Dr. Etemad. During your appointment, she completes an oral exam, asks you about your goals for treatment, and takes a series of 3D images of your teeth using an intraoral scanner. Dr. Etemad uploads these scans to a computer and develops a digital treatment plan that maps out the step-by-step movements of your smile. She sends your treatment plan to a dental laboratory that manufactures your first set of aligners.

When ready, you return to the office and receive your first set of aligners. Invisalign provides more precision and comfort than traditional braces. Every 2-3 weeks, you change into a new set of aligners. In order to achieve the best results, you wear your Invisalign aligners for between 20-22 hours each day.

Do I need to clean my Invisalign aligners?

Yes. To keep your Invisalign aligners in good shape, it’s important to clean them regularly. Rinse them off with cool tap water throughout the day and brush them gently with a soft-bristle toothbrush and toothpaste at night. For more thorough cleanings, ask Dr. Etemad about the Invisalign Cleaning System.
